South University Launches Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration

Online Program Combines Business and Management Skills to Develop Healthcare Leaders

SAVANNAH, Ga. – South University (http://online.southuniversity.edu) is launching a Master of Business Administration for Health Care Administration (MBA/HCA) program with online courses beginning on April 3.

The U.S. Department of Labor's 2006 – 2007 Occupational Outlook Handbook forecasts: "employment of medical and health service managers is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014, as the healthcare industry continues to expand and diversify" <http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos014.htm>. The Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration is a 48-credit, 12-course program designed to train students for a leadership role in the healthcare delivery system.

"The MBA/HCA program is designed to provide baccalaureate graduates and professionals with advanced educational opportunities regardless of geographic, lifestyle or physical constraints," said South University Healthcare Management Department Chair Dr. Martin Perlin. "The new program also compliments existing nursing and healthcare offerings at South University and addresses the need for current students to gain comprehensive instruction to participate in one of the faster growing professional sectors in the U.S."

The MBA/HCA program is designed for maximum convenience and flexibility with accelerated (5.5 week) sessions and eight start dates per year. The courses also offer an interactive approach to online learning with colleagues from around the country. Unlike many traditional MBA programs that view organizations as a collection of marketing, operations and finance silos, South University integrates these functional areas in the same holistic approach taken by today's most successful organizations.

"In the growing healthcare industry, leaders require training in economic, legal, regulatory, managerial, political, historical and social aspects in order to advance and effectively manage today's complex healthcare organizations," said South University Chancellor John T. South III. "South University's online MBA in Healthcare Administration prepares students to become leaders in the healthcare industry with a foundation in business analysis and decision making while focusing on a specialization in healthcare administration."

The curriculum begins with business foundation courses in microeconomics and decision making, organization behavior and strategic management. Next, students take a cross-functional MBA core with courses in business analysis, firm and market development, managing firm operations and managing the supply chain. Following the MBA core, students enter the healthcare specialization track with courses in policy and administration.

The Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration joins the University's current roster of online degree programs: Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN). All of South University's online degree programs engage students with vibrant interactive communities, a faculty of skilled instructors and career-oriented courses that reflect South University's rich tradition of academic excellence.
